General Thoughts
Online learning's remarkable growth has shifted much of the power of education from the instructor to the student. In my view, this is the direction that should been taken long before the advent of the internet. Student-centered education has proven to be the most effective way to optimize student learning outcomes. At a recent conference I heard the speaker say something like, "we should fund schools not by the number of students sitting in a math class for example, but rather by the number of math problems they get right." Interesting notion that may prove to be very difficult to apply. So, the transition is from being the "sage on the stage" to becoming the "guide on the side." I wish I had thought that up, but can't remember where I came across it.
